徳川家康が江戸に幕府を築いてから、隣接する房総半島では大規模な河川工事、新田開発が始まり、酪農や軍馬の育成といった畜産も盛んになりました。この動きの中で大工や農家の仕事道具をつくる鍛冶職人も生まれてきます。明治維新後は作る道具の幅も広がり、職人の仕事道具=工匠具の産地として全国に知られていきました。

千葉県には今も伝統的な技術技法で鋏、鎌、包丁といった鉄製の仕事道具・日用品をつくる職人が残っています。手作りならではの味、伝統に裏付けられた技術の高さが千葉県の鍛冶屋の魅力です。

Craftsmen in Japan and all over the world continue to appreciate the fine qualities of Chiba Artisan Tools. They are still produced by hand, in traditional blacksmith studios that ring with the sound of daily hammering! 

 

The Boso Peninsula is the distinctive geographical feature of the Chiba Prefecture, which lies directly to the South and East of Tokyo. Iron manufacture and blacksmithing have been practiced there for centuries,and saw rapid growth during the Edo Period (1603-1868), when the demand for agricultural development and urban construction increased.

 

Later, in the Meiji period (1868-1912), it became thriving to manufacture tools forartisans working in the pastoral farming and the textile industries. By 1874, the first domestically-produced Western-style scissors had been manufactured in Chiba, 

and the distribution of these and the distinctive short-handled ‘Tobi Suzume’ sickles throughout Japan and overseas, established Chiba Prefecture as an important producer of artisan tools. 

 

 

In 2017, the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry officially designated Chiba Artisan Tools as a traditional craft.
